The 2025 spring season starts in March 2025!

Who we are

We're the SAW Composite Youth Mountain Biking Team and we had a fantastic year in 2024 with practices, races, group rides, potluck dinners and a post-season campout at the Stokesville Campground.

We're planning to start up in the spring with a pre-season meeting on Friday February 28, 2025. Our first practice is scheduled for Wednesday March 12, 2025. So...

Whether you're a beginner or on your way to being an expert mountain biker, come ride with us!

  • Elementary, middle or high school—boys and girls—all welcome!
  • You'll learn key mountain biking skills!
  • You'll ride your bike on trails and in the woods with other kids at practices and on fun adventure rides!
  • You'll build up your mountain-biking strength, endurance and proficiency!
  • You can compete in races—but only if you want to!

2025 will be our eighth year!

SAW Composite has been getting local kids involved in mountain biking since 2017. Our team is open to boys and girls who are elementary, middle and high school students in Staunton, Augusta County, and Waynesboro. Our focus is to provide kids with the option (and training) to race competitively, ride mountain bikes for fun and adventure, and engage in a healthy afterschool activity with their peers. Please note that competing in races is not required in order to join our team.

We are a member club of the Virginia High School Cycling League, itself a Project League of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA).  Our coaches are unpaid volunteers who are NICA-licensed and NICA-trained. As NICA coaches we’re guided by values of fun, inclusivity, respect and community. We build strong minds, bodies, character and communities through cycling.

When and Where

Practices: We hold evening practices twice a week on Wednesdays and Fridays from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at Montgomery Hall Park in Staunton. During practice you'll work on drills to improve your bike-handling skills, and you'll ride the trails in the park to put your skills to work and build up your strength and endurance. The first practice for the spring season will take place on March 12, 2025. The summer/fall season starts in August.

Racing toward the finish line at Stokesville

Races: Races are held on Saturdays, with riders of different age groups and abilities racing at different times throughout the day. We participate in the spring VAHS racing season (four races) and the fall NICA racing season (four races). The first race of the VAHS spring season is scheduled for April 12, 2025.

During the NICA 2024 fall season that ended in October 2024, we fielded three amazing riders who pedaled their mountain bikes over roots and rocks, up and down challenging hills and around ridiculously sharp corners all the way to the finish line while their teammates cheered them on.

The spring VAHS races are open to elementary, middle and high school youths, while the fall NICA races are open to middle and high school youths. The races are fun and exciting events with hundreds of riders from teams all over Virginia — and sometimes beyond! Come ride with us!
